Hooray it’s our Independence day and ….. there’s no cheering! Nigerians seem unhappy at the state of things in the country. I turned to Twitter this morning to see the trending hashtags celebrating our 60th anniversary and I was surprised to see “#Nigeria60andUseless” as the first one!. I know people have a lot to say about the Nigerian situation but I didn’t think they’d voice out their pain today.
I am of the opinion that today should be celebratory because despite all the things that are wrong, there are so many things that are right! The most important reason to celebrate is LIFE, despite the life-threatening, economy-crumbling, business-shattering of COVID -19 pandemic we still survived. I thought it would be a celebration of life – for those who were lost to the pandemic, others who recovered, the tireless efforts of the medics and paramedics and the rest of us who did not contract the illness. It should be a celebration of life- no matter the crudity, hardships and deprivations of modern living.
Celebrate my 9ja people we are alive in this great country!!!
So many tweets flying around about why this country is going downhill, with accusing fingers being pointed here and there! We blame the leaders, our history, and our society but we forget that people make up these institutions. Yes corruption is our major pitfall but systems can never be corrupt if people aren’t corrupt.
People should voice their concerns and demand for a real and sustainable change in our country but I think on our 60th Independence; we should celebrate our doggedness, resilience, and whatever success we’ve been able to achieve.
