All You Need To Know About Kindness

As a child that was raised here in Nigeria, my parents cared more about how I treated others more than how I played or how I engage in extracurricular activities. In fact, I used to feel like they were always in the lurk somewhere waiting to jump me if I ever behaved badly, spoke to anyone rudely or hit a friend on the playground. I don’t want to go through the pains I have felt after being ‘scolded’ for disrespecting an adult which comes in different forms here in Nigeria; from not getting up when an adult approaches to your seat, to refusing to go on an errand for an adult or jumping into the conversations of adults; every non-verbal misbehavior was solidly advocated against with words, sticks and stones which definitely broke my bones and helped me become this wonderful, polite, kind and considerate adult I am today.

People think of kindness in different forms. We spend time focused on the varieties of kind gestures we can get involved in and lose sight on simply just being friendly, courteous, considerate and generous. You know when someone pays they will pay in kind, they mean they will do an act of kindness in return of what you did for them. Acts of kindness differ to different people at different times.

Being kind has its own benefits you know:

  • It strengthens bonds and relationships
  • It informs people of who you truly are
  • It always comes back to you – the general principle of sow and reap
  • It helps you build good character, values and reputation.

In each day, different opportunities present themselves to be kind. Your child asks for your help to pick something beyond their reach, your neighbor forgets their clothes on the line and it’s about to rain, you help them pack it in your house till they return. You notice a colleague seems drained, unmotivated and just plain exhausted, you give them a call, send them an emoji even. You hear someone got involved in a minor accident, you pay them a visit in the hospital, bringing them warmth and light.

One thing I love saying is ‘The world will be a better place if we all try to be kind at all times’
